Marathoner Running Against Incurable Cancer

Scott Toner ran his first marathon just four months ago. He started running when most people would have sat down. He was out on sick leave at the time because of chemotherapy.

"I'm doing this to show people that have cancer that you don't have to just sort of give up," Toner said. "You can keep on living a healthy life or live a life where you can do things."

NewsCenter 5's Pam Cross reported that like many runners, Toner is running to support cancer research. But he is also fighting a rare form of pancreatic cancer that has no cure.

He is participating in clinical trials of endostatin and said that it -- along with acupuncture and herbal remedies -- have helped.

"They don't say that endostatin's a cure, but again, I think, as long as I keep on living, I consider it a cure," he said. I had my depressed time, and then I realized you might as well enjoy the time you have left."

Toner and his family members have raised $8,000 so far for the American Cancer Society. For years, his mother raised money for breast cancer research, not knowing that her own son would one day need cancer advances.

"We're very, very proud of him," said his mother, Ethel Toner. "He's really stood up to the challenge, and he determined right at the beginning that's he's going to fight this and he's going to win, and I think he's right on target."

Scott Toner finished his first marathon in just under four hours.

"You start saying, 'Maybe I should stop,' and you talk yourself into going an extra mile," he said. "And then you get to the 16th mile, and you say, 'OK, I can go a little bit further.'"
