Patient Information Center... Auricular Acupuncture

What Is Auricular Acupuncture?

No, ear acupuncture does not hurt, it is painless and can bring on a very relaxing sensation eliminating stress, as well as alleviating many complaints and conditions.

Auricular or Ear Acupuncture is a  therapy where acupuncture points on the outer ear are treated, using either needles or electro acupunctoscopes. These points can be used to help relieve many acute and chronic conditions. Auricular acupuncture is one of the more widely used microsystems within oriental medicine. Microsystems use one aspect of the body - ears, hands, or feet, for example - to treat conditions that are present anywhere in the body. Auricular acupuncture may be used as a primary mode of treatment or in conjunction with other full body treatments such as acupuncture or bodywork, or herbology.

The shape of the ear resembles an inverted fetus in the mother's womb. Chinese Acupuncture points on the ears have a similar relation to the various anatomical areas of the fetus.

There are as many as two hundred acupuncture points on the outer ear, each point named generally after areas of our anatomy. The outer ear acts like a  circuit board to the brain. Each acupoints can trigger electrical impulses, from the ear, via the brain, to the specific areas of the body. Therefore if someone has a painful low back, for example, treating the 'sciatic' acupoint on the ear, would help alleviate the pain. Ear acupuncture is commonly used for addictions such as drugs, smoking or weight loss.  See image above for the five points in each ear used for the addiction protocol.
