Patient Information Center... Tuina (Chinese bodywork)

What is Tuina?

The origins of Oriental bodywork can be seen as far back as 100B.C. as reported in the oldest written medical text the Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen (The Yellow Emperor's Internal Cannon). In every dynasty of China up to the present day therapeutic massage and bodywork has played a vital role. Tuina is a form of therapeutic massage that dates back to the Shang Dynasty of China, 1700 B.C.E.. Although, Tuina was originally developed for traumatic injuries and pediatric care today it can be used to treat much more. Tuina utilizes the same principles and diagnostic tools of Traditional Chinese Medicine to create harmony in an individual.

Currently, Tuina is taught as a separate but equal field of study in the major traditional Chinese medical colleges. Tuina doctors receive the same demanding training as acupuncturists and herbalists and all fields share and deserve the same level of professional respect.
